Integrating Classical Chinese Poetry-Based Vocal Works into University-Level Vocal Teaching: A Research-Based Analysis

Abstract

Classical Chinese poetry-based vocal works, emerging from the deep integration of traditional poetic texts and vocal art, represent high-quality pedagogical resources that embody both literary value and vocal training potential. In current university-level vocal instruction, however, greater emphasis is often placed on Western repertoire and popular or folk songs, while works rooted in traditional Chinese culture remain underrepresented. This study examines the pedagogical advantages of integrating classical Chinese poetry-based vocal works from two key dimensions: cultural cultivation and technical training. It proposes a tripartite classification of repertoire, including adaptations of traditional melodies, modern Chinese art songs, and operatic excerpts based on classical poetry. Furthermore, the paper outlines implementable instructional strategies encompassing textual analysis, vocal phrasing and tone production, interpretation of artistic conception (yijing), multimedia-assisted teaching, and stage practice. By combining theoretical discussion with illustrative examples, this study offers a comprehensive practical framework for incorporating Chinese classical poetic heritage into higher education vocal curricula and for refining existing vocal training systems.
